Mentoring is a time-proven strategy of matching youngsters with caring, consistent, and competent adults outside of their families for the purpose of creating meaningful and supportive relationships that foster pro-social behavior in young people, enabling them to become contributing members of society.
Overview:
This program began in the summer of 2013. CSDN’s Boys-2-Men Mentoring Program pairs male mentors with boys ages 10-16. The goal of this program is to provide a structured environment for young boys to develop the basic skills of life. This program is conducted after school and during the summer months and includes a “rights-of-passage ceremony.”
Objective:
Provide a structured environment for young boys to develop the basic skills of life.
- Respect
- Responsibility and Accountability
- Community Service
- Decision making
- Team Work
- Problem Resolution
- Character
The boys will participate in Life Skills Development Training Sessions and Activities. One Approach to accomplish this will be to structure a group of boys to simulate a Project Management Team (PMT). This group will meet weekly for 2 hours where they will develop and implement various initiatives and projects of the groups' choosing. The boys will be trained to use their own creativity and skills to develop, manage and execute their plan to accomplish each project and initiative. A great deal of the projects will be community service oriented. Other proven-successful Approaches will be used. CSDN mentors, sponsors, and volunteers will provide close supervision, guidance, mentoring and training.
Commitment:
Each member of this Program and their parents will have gone through an interview and selection process and will be required to sign a document that clearly lays out the rules and guidelines each individual and their parents must commit to before being accepted as a member of the group.
Training:
The group of young boys will receive a good number of hours of training. This training will be a combination of time spent with CSDN “mentors,” structured lessons, outings, and exposure to influential people.
Meeting Components:
- Rap session - 20 minutes
- Workshop - 30 minutes
- Snacks - 20 minutes
- Recreation - 20 minutes
- Project and Activities Planning - 30 minutes
